2014

My first experiment into the Cloud Campus was clumsy.  I fumbled with navigation, got my avatar stuck behind a bush, wedged into a corner, then pinned to a chair. Panicked and embarrassed, I immediately logged off, questioning how in the world an avatar in a virtual environment was going to enhance my real estate career, and what the heck (!?) was Debbie raving about.

Debbie and I started our careers in real estate in 1999; Y2K was an ominous threat. We wore pantyhoselipstick, heels and pant suits. All real estate listings were published in paperback books  and were categorized by price and location. We had scheduled, assigned floor duty. Lead generation was a script, a phone book and dial after dial on the land line at our desks in the bullpen. Our database kept under lock and key in a recipe box.  Totem Map Books were a primary source of navigation. Lockboxes had metal keys, hardly anyone had a cell phone or the need for a computer. Real estate contracts were hand written on carbon copies in triplicate, you had to press down so hard with a ballpoint pen that it left your fingers sore. As agents, we were the ultimate gatekeepers of property information. If you were looking for a home, you couldn't log on to the internet to search. You had to browse the newspaper ads for an office, locate an agent, (typically by their picture and endearing smile) and hope you struck gold with a savvy professional.


2009

Economic downturn and industry shift. Business had flatlined. Brokerages were closing shop due to high overhead, real estate agents were taking second jobs or hanging their hat. Suddenly, an explosion of mobile applications, social media, CRM software, inbound marketing practices and lead generation appeared. Technology was quickly revolutionizing the industry. Hours were spent working in the business, searching for inspiration, guidance, and the right tech applications to stay relevant. The world was quickly changing. eXp Realty was born.

How a Cup of Coffee Changed My Career

 
 
 

October 2014, I met with Debbie over coffee to catch up. 

She was ecstatic, energized and bubbling over with enthusiasm about the brokerage she recently joined.  Debbie launched into discussion about the learning opportunity that built their office space online - in a Cloud Environment for agents to collaborate together on a national scale and the opportunity to build wealth through multiple income streams. It was the most innovative real estate company she’d ever seen. 

Intrigued, I met for lunch the next day with Debbie and Founder, CEO and Visionary, Glenn Sanford. After 10 minutes talking with Glenn, my decision was made. This was the Brokerage of the Future and I wanted to be part of it.

Glenn showed me how to navigate the virtual environment. It was like nothing I’d ever experienced. We toured conference rooms, private offices, buildings filled with staff, transaction managers and agent support specialists. There was an auditorium, beach-side tables and even a soccer field. We chatted with agents from Washington, Florida, Texas, California and Maine and Massachusetts  leading a workshop together . People were excited, playful. They were having fun. They were working together to improve their business.  I joined the company that October as agent 337, and I have never looked back.
